Mechanically Assisted Liposuction

Mechanically assisted liposuction is a relatively new technique, not yet offered by all cosmetic or plastic surgeons, that has been shown to be both more effective and less painful than traditional liposuction. Liposuction is a popular cosmetic procedure that works to eliminate excess fat in specific locations on the patient's body.  Although traditional liposuction procedures already have a high success rate and are relatively safe, a new "power cannula" offers shorter recovery time and better results to many patients. It simultaneously reduces surgeon fatigue.

The Surgery

Mechanically assisted liposuction is performed similarly to routine liposuction, but the motorized cannula allows for less surgeon fatigue, shorter operating time, and quicker patient recovery. The "power cannula" is a reciprocating tool that sucks away excess fat as its tip moves back and forth through the tissue. The cannula can be operated by either gas or electricity. When the power is off, the cannula can be used manually as in routine liposuction. It has been shown that mechanically assisted liposuction can remove up to 30% more fat than liposuction performed manually. Like traditional liposuction, the procedure can be performed in a hospital or surgical suite. The surgeon and patient may elect local anesthesia with or without sedation or general anesthesia.

After the Surgery

Recovery from mechanically assisted liposuction may be shorter and easier for the patient than from routine, manual liposuction. Patients report less discomfort, less bruising, and less swelling when the powered cannula is used. Some patients may be able to return to work and other activities sooner after this procedure than after other types of liposuction. Some swelling, bruising, and numbness can still be expected.

Health Concerns

As with any cosmetic surgical procedure, complications are rare but can include infection, a reaction to the anesthesia, blood clotting, and fluid loss.  Less severe risks include a numbing of the skin and moderate changes in skin pigmentation. It is extremely important to choose a physician who has proper and extensive training, with state-of-the-art facilities and a good standing in the field. Smokers will be advised to stop both two weeks prior to and following surgery. Mechanically assisted liposuction is consider to be as safe as manual liposuction with reduced pain and recovery time.
