Lip Augmentation

Lip augmentation is a surgical procedure that can increase the size of a person's lips and help improve facial appearance. The procedure can be done on one or both lips. It is effective for both men and women of any age. In some cases, the change is permanent, in others temporary.

The Surgery

There are several methods for performing lip augmentation surgery, including injections and grafts. The most common substances used in lip augmentation injections are collagen and fat. Both provide temporary results and may be repeated. Injections are given through a tiny needle. Fat injections have a lower risk of allergic reaction, because the fat is usually taken from another location on the patient's body. An allergy test is usually given before a collagen injection is performed to guard against a negative reaction. Grafts can also come from several sources, such as alloplast (material from a human donor), SoftForm (permanent results from synthetic material), and fat grafts. Finally, lip augmentation may be performed by using local flaps to bring tissue from inside the mouth to the outside, where it can enhance appearance.

After Surgery

Lip augmentation is usually an outpatient procedure. It is most often done under local anesthesia. Some swelling and discomfort is common after surgery. Cold compresses and pain medication may help. Antibiotics may be prescribes to help prevent infection. Healing after injection procedures tends to be quicker than after grafting or flap surgeries. The length of time that results from lip augmentation last depends on the type of procedure used and each patient's response.

Alternative Procedures

Nonsurgical options do exist for patients who want to improve their lips' appearance. Some patients can achieve satisfactory results through dental procedure that bring the lips forward or through permanent cosmetic tattoos. In other cases, a mouth lift might be an alternative to lip augmentation.

Health Concerns

Lip augmentation is considered to be a safe procedure, but certain risks are associated with any surgical procedure. There is a possible risk of infection, as well as the chance of having a bad reaction to the anesthesia. Other unusual but possible complications include swelling, numbness, and scarring.
