Transilluminated Powered Vein Extraction

Transilluminated Powdered Vein Extraction, also known as transilluminated powdered phlebectomy (TIPP), is a surgical procedure that removes veins using a special light and a limited number of incisions. Using the technology of the transilluminated light, which allows the doctor to locate veins when the patient is lying horizontally, this procedure allows varicose veins to be removed effectively with a relatively short recovery time.

The Procedure

In transilluminated powdered vein extraction, a special light is first used to locate varicose veins, and then a powdered instrument is used to remove them. This is known as the Trivex system. The light first passes through the skin, allowing the doctor to see the vein clearly while performing the procedure. After the doctor makes the minimal number of incisions necessary (sometimes as few as two), a rotating blade and suction are used to remove the vein. Usually done as an outpatient procedure, transilluminated powdered vein extraction requires either general or light anesthesia. The procedure is fairly short and produces good cosmetic result.

After a Transilluminated Powdered Vein Extraction

Transilluminated powdered vein extraction is considered to be a safe, effective, and relatively comfortable procedure. Recovery time is much shorter than traditional varicose vein removal procedures.  Little pain or scarring should be expected after surgery. A support stocking may be worn for several weeks following the procedure in order to aid healing. For patients who experience painful varicose veins before surgery, the results will be especially dramatic. Cosmetic improvement is also significant.
